'tis the season...

... to get engaged! Uhh, not me.. but my dear friends!

Three close friends, two engagements, all in one week. I feel a little silly saying this, but I felt a tad bit overwhelmed.. because I realized I am now at the age where friends are gradually taking their relationships to the next level by getting engaged/married. WHEN did this happen?? WHY am I getting older?

Anyway, this post wasn't supposed to be about me complaining about my age. I just wanted to share the great news of some amazing friends.. and I am incredibly excited for them!

pumpkin or pecan?

Normally I would go to the local Polly's Pies to buy dessert (pumpkin pie & my all time favorite banberry pie) for Thanksgiving dinner, but why should I do that when I can bake it myself? The biggest dilemma I faced was deciding on a type of pie... pumpkin? Or pecan? Or pumpkin AND pecan? Or should I just buy the dang dessert because the thought of baking it is stressing me out? <--- the thought I had when I couldn't decide. And then, my brilliant friend sent over a recipe for................ pumpkin and pecan crunch streusel pie! Problem solved. The recipe itself was pretty simple to follow, and it yielded one pie that had just the right amount of sugar and spice for our Korean taste buds. Now for pictures!

I also baked vanilla cupcakes with chocolate buttercream frosting (Magnolia Bakery's recipe) for the kiddies. They happily (and overly) decorated the cupcakes with Christmas sprinkles I purchased from Target.

I think I am all baked out for the year... or not. I still need to make gingerbread cookies. YUM.

a midweek excursion

Veteran's day fell on a Wednesday this year, and luckily, I got the day off of work. I had to drive out to San Bernardino in the morning for an appointment on Wednesday, so being told on Tuesday that I didn't have to go in to work the next day was music to my ears. There was no need for me rush through lunch with my parents after my appointment and drive back to the OC in time for work. So, I decided to hang around my parent's place and relax. I planned to read/work on some papers, but my mom had other plans for us. She went to an apple farm a month ago with her friends and decided she wanted to take me there (mainly because this was her opportunity to flee from the store and have my dad work as she played.. with me!)

And so, we set off to Riley's Apple Farm in Oak Glen, CA. I love driving those mountainous roads.. however, I would have enjoyed it more if my mom let me listen to music. She never lets me listen to the radio while driving.. she says it's too loud and distracting. For me, the driver? No, for her, the passenger chatting away on her cell phone. Even when I have the volume down so low that the music is barely audible.. ok, I digress. Anyhow, after a 30 minute drive we arrived at the farm and it was...... deserted. Apart from the few employees/farmhand and a couple with their toddler, we had the farm all to ourselves. Colorful foliage, crisp air, a bit nippy.. autumn, you DO exist in California! I was extremely content.. as was Momma Chung. :)

Though I wish I had my slr with me (whenever I go to any place of interest, I never have my slr on hand), I can always depend on my canon. It is small, portable, and convenient.. thus never leaves my side.. literally. I always keep it in my bag.. and my bag goes everywhere I go. Okay. Enough typing. Picture time!

(note: some photos have been edited, but the majority are straight out of the camera. either way, enjoy!)

yes, we are holding pumpkins. she made me do it.

Due to the lack of apples, we went about a mile up the road and came upon this store.. this store of APPLES GALORE! There was a huge variety of apples, candied apples, apple jams, apple cider, apple juice, apple pies, apple bread, apples, apples, APPLES! Hmm, the spelling of apple looks weird.. and sounds weird after I typed all of this. So much to choose from... we opted for the honey crisp apple and applesauce bread.. which are not pictured.. -_-

Oh, I guess I forgot to mention apple season ended sometime in October.

The end.

baking halloween

My friend Jessica had the brilliant idea to bake Halloween cupcakes. So we got out the mixer, the ingredients, the decorations, and after deciding on the type of cupcake, we were set to bake! What did we bake, you ask? Red.. scratch that.. GREEN velvet cupcakes!

However.. we didn't quite get the shade of green we were aiming for. I mean, it was a nice, vibrant green while mixing.. that is, before we added the cocoa powder/flour.

Lo and behold.. Halloween cupcakes gone wrong.........

hmmm... no comment.
but once baked, a mossy green? reminded me of frankenstein's monster for some odd reason.
time to frost & decorate!
and voila! the finished product!

Now that Halloween is officially over, farewell October. Welcome November!

And, hello pumpkin inspired desserts!

we are 'happyhappy'

Why so happy? Because we managed to escape the scorching 100+ degree heat by running off to the LACMA. The BCAM is currently featuring an exhibition by 12 South Korean artisits (ending Sept. 20), which was the motive behind our visit. However, due to the fact that photography is not allowed inside the museum itself, this installation found just outside the entrance was the only work of art I managed to snap a picture of. Here we have hundreds of plastic containers strung and hung from ceiling to floor!

HappyHappy by Choi Jeong-Hwa

A walk through these hanging containers are quite fun.. they sway, spin, and if not careful, hit you in the face.

And of course, Urban Light.

On a completely different note, it's fire season in California.. =/
This was taken on Saturday. Los Angeles is currently engulfed by dense brown smoke. Yuck. Hopefully, the Angeles Forest fire will be contained soon.
